The current ExhibitionAvantgarde Brave new world? Of course! We are waiting for the avant-garde! We perceive and accept it in the works of Elke Seppmann, although nothing in them is the way it once was, almost nothing, and nothing is yet the way it is. We believe them because they juxtapose the past and the future perfectly, do not overtax us with the complexities of the present, and yet mean above all exactly that. Elke Seppmann is a fantastic story-teller. The people she paints encounter one another at the art show opening or at the camp ground. They are travelling in distant countries or are on a jaunt in well-known surroundings, sitting next to one another like strangers or looking out of the window into the shop window across the street at night. Somehow this is all familiar to us. But the longer we look, the more mysterious the scenes become. While composition and use of colour suggest a picture continuum, the significance of the individual elements breaks and crashes on the interfaces, perspectives and details. A plot is laid out, just like in film sequences. The protagonists in the scenes which remind us of camera close-ups in film sequences remain anonymous and unrecognised. Elke Seppmann has a sense of the dramatic in these psychologically ambiguous, in part subtle paintings.
